2012
Braford youth guarantee a sound future for the breed.
Hands on activities enticed young Braford cattle enthusiasts to pack their swags and head to the Wandoan Showgrounds for the annual two-day Braford Youth Camp in mid-January. The camp is co-ordinated by Robert and Lesette Hoffmann of Downfall Creek Braford Stud, Guluguba, with support from members of the South Qld Braford Promotion Group who provide cattle for the week-end’s activities.
The participants, aged between three and sixteen, travelled from as far as Dubbo in NSW and Mitchell in Western Qld to attend the action packed week-end. The camp gave the group the opportunity to learn a variety of skills associated with show presentation, including breaking in, grooming, parading, junior judging, bull selection and NLIS information and demonstration. Experienced judge and instructor, Darryl Waugh from Wandoan, explained to the group the criteria used when judging and selecting animals for commercial competitions.
The instructors were very impressed with the enthusiasm and overall ability these young people demonstrated. Parading instructor, Brett Scott for Toowoomba said “The quiet cattle gave the kids a great week-end and it is the ideal place to meet people and gain friendships. The activities were fun and educational, with smiles and laughter all week-end.”
This year all age groups enjoyed learning the art of sausage-making, kindly demonstrated by Trent Bein of Miles Wholesale Meats, whose family-operated business has won numerous meat awards.
Registered nurse and Braford breeder, Lyn Stiller from Guluguba, had a very captive audience when she gave her presentation on the importance of sun protection and first aid procedures for snake bite.
A great week-end was had by all, with the intention of doing it all again in 2013.
