2003 SALE ROUNDUP

Ascot/Neimen Sale

Summary:  15 Registered Bulls av $4,520  Top  $16,500
                   13 Herd Bulls av $2,423  Top $6,500

Our Grand Champion bull from Beef 2003 and other local shows certainly set the tempo going at our recent sale, when Ascot Brother Jock by Coograli O'Riley was sold to the Meek family from Cargara, Augathella for $16,500. Mick, Wilma and Jack had seen Brother Jock at Beef 2003 and believed he was the bull for them and were very pleased to be able to follow his progress through and purchase him.

The losing bidder on Brother Jock was the Hawe family from Ballyduggan, Bundaberg who later in the sale purchased two stud bulls to average $3250.

Ray Kidd outlaid $8000 on Ascot Quid by Abernethy Morgan and also purchased a herd bull. Our only interstate buyer this year was Doug and Ken Barnett from Croppa Creek who bought a top Coograli O'Riley bull who had an EMA of 130 sq cm for $9000.

Repeat buyers Artie and Dell Kehl from Wallumbilla bought the Junior Reserve Champion from Beef 2003, Ascot Sphinx for $5500. Merv Tilly from Beaudesert a first time buyer purchased a registered bull for $3000.

The two major buyers of the day were Russell Whiteman, Waybalena, Rolleston who purchased 3 registered bulls and 3 herd bulls while Charles Green from Moorabinda, Taroom bought 1 registered bull and 6 herd bulls.

Other buyers of note were L & C Han from St George being represented by Paul McCosker buying 3 stud bulls, the McNamara family from Bell, D & S Atto from Biloela and Glenn and Leith Eggins from Thangool who purchased the top priced herd bull for $6500.

Our western buyers were all absent this year due to the ongoing seasonal conditions leaving a gap in the sale's buying strength. We had 25% new buyers at our sale and were very pleased with the overall result.

At the completion of the sale the most unusual, unpleasant cold windy day saw our 100 visitors enjoying a steak but not the cold drinks we had on offer.

Arran Sale

Summary:  24 Bulls av $2,700  Top  $4,500

With drought conditions still prevailing and indeed, many of us, finishing our third year of drought, the 5th annual Booroomba bull sale met with a pleasing result.

In a near total clearance, 24, of the 28 bulls on offer, sold for an average of $2,700.

Top price of $4,500 was paid twice, once for Lot 1, a beefy Warlock son, purchased by Ray Kidd and again for Lot 15, an upstanding son of Abernethy Oakey, knocked down to Gundy partnership of Moree who finished with three bulls for an average price of $3,660.

Bill and Robin Ridge from Bourke added further support by selecting four for an average of $2,750.

Yarkeita Pastoral Company and Cam Crumblin from Wombil Downs both finished with three bulls each.

We appreciated the attendance of fellow Braford breeders, many of whom travelled a considerable distance to be with us on the day.  We were also pleasantly surprised when near neighbours, Donna Downs, invested in two Braford bulls for their herd.  Perhaps there are some positives in this drought after all.
